The Daredevils were hit with some bad news just six days ahead of their opening Indian Premier League match against the Chennai Super Kings. Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews will miss the match due to Tamil Nadu state’s continued ban on all Sri Lankan sportsmen and women which bars them from competing in such events. The ban stems from the treatment of Tamils in Sri Lanka and the political tensions that has on the southern Indian state.
From a purely cricketing standpoint, this is a fairly big blow to the Daredevils who need to get off to a good start after the horrendous season last year. The Daredevils will miss the all-rounder Mathews against a Chennai lineup that features the likes of MS Dhoni, Faf du Plessis, and Brendon McCullum. Delhi spent big during the IPL 8 auction in order to get Mathews for these types of important fixtures. They’ll need him in form for their second fixture on April 12th at home in Delhi against the Rajasthan Royals.
