Lost in all the World Cup Final news and aftermath was South African all-rounder JP Duminy’s rise to captaincy of the Delhi Daredevils. Duminy was selected by fellow South African and World Cup winning coach Gary Kirsten ahead of the likes of Yuvraj Singh. Duminy’s leadership role is often overlooked from outsiders in a Proteas setup that boasts the likes of AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn, but he is no slouch, having captained the T20 Proteas side in November. His poise on the field during the World Cup was enough to landed a spot as the ICC’s 9th best all-rounder in one day internationals, which were released March 31st.
The Daredevils poor performance during last seasons IPL meant they have released the likes of Kevin Pietersen, Ross Taylor, and fellow South African Wayne Parnell along with ten others. Though this Daredevils side also features some excellent talent including a handful of South Africans. In addition to Duminy, the Daredevils also have Albie Morkel, Quinton De Kock, and Imran Tahir as well as Mohammed Shami and Angelo Mathews. Regarding the upcoming IPL 8 and the squad he will lead out, Duminy spoke to SuperSport and mentioned the strong balance in the team as well as excellent allrounders. The South African also noted Yuvraj Singh and he would look to be in the number four and five position. Delhi were nothing short of an embarrassment last season managing a mere four points so Duminy will be eager to get things going in the right direction in their opening match against a strong Super Kings side in Chennai in a weeks time.
Below is the 2015 Delhi Daredevils squad for IPL 8:
